Our answer was to build something new from something old—Monomyth. The monomyth, also called the Hero’s Journey, is a tale as old as time. An ordinary person faces the past, learns from it, and transforms into something greater. We took it a step further by integrating cutting-edge science that helps men turn insight into action.
What about the community part? Monomyth, presented by the Lockhart Retreat, is offered at the beautiful Gilmont Camp and Conference Center in the Piney Woods of East Texas. Hiking through old growth pines, campfires, relaxing by the water, and immersion in nature are core elements of what we do. At the Lockhart Retreat, we pride ourselves on taking men from strangers to brothers.
The Lockhart Retreat began with a simple question: What would it look like to create a space where men can be themselves, forge community, and grow without the shame and expectations that come from daily life?

Are you a man who wants to feel better prepared to tackle life? If so, Monomyth is for you.
Unlike a lot of traditional wellness retreats, Monomyth isn’t focused on treating symptoms and “fixing” disorders. Instead, our philosophy relies on taking what’s already working and making it even better. If you’ve been struggling with burnout, overwhelm, or keeping up with the day-to-day, Monomyth can help. It can also be helpful for those who simply want to go from good to great.

The Monomyth retreat includes three primary components: group workshop sessions, skill-building, and community leisure activities.
Our workshop sessions utilize the Story of Self program. Story of Self is a structured narrative framework that helps individuals strengthen their sense of identity, meaning, and purpose. Workshop sessions include a mix of lecture, writing, and group discussion activities.
Skill-building sessions help men develop greater self-efficacy and resilience using evidenced-based tools for mental performance improvement. These sessions provide men with tools to integrate knowledge from workshop sessions into daily life.
Community leisure activities at the Gilmont Camp and Conference Center ensure that our program isn’t all work, no play. During leisure activities and down-time, participants have opportunities to relax and make build friendships outside of the pressures of daily life.

Monomyth is not a religious program. We welcome individuals of all belief systems. Instead, we focus on building a sense of connectedness with something greater than ourselves. For some, that takes the form of a “higher power” or faith tradition. For others, this connectedness may be found through music, nature, companionship, animals, or another method.
Wherever you find yourself, we’d be honored to have you.
